HIROSHI SUGIMOTO’S SEASCAPES

  • 19 Oct — 07 Jan 24

ONLINE EXHIBITION

Hiroshi Sugimoto (b. 1948) is a contemporary Japanese photographer whose esoteric practice explores memory and time. Using the intrinsic quality of long exposure photography, the artist provides insight into how the medium can both obscure and alter reality.

Sugimoto first started photographing seascapes in 1980. Since then he has travelled all over the world documenting and photographing different seas and oceans, from the Adriatic to the Caribbean, the Black Sea, the Arctic, Japan and the Atlantic and Pacific. In his Seascapes, Sugimoto captures traces of light and movement in rich, hazy compositions that consider temporality and the realms of perception. The images are meticulously composed, so that the sea and the sky have equal proportions, with the horizon always in the centre. Often using long exposures, Sugimoto thus creates painterly images where clouds and waves are blurred in a timeless meditation

“Every time I view the sea, I feel a calming sense of security, as if visiting my ancestral home; I embark on a voyage of seeing.”– Hiroshi Sugimoto

In this online exhibition we bring together works from Sugimoto’s Time Exposed portfolio consisting of fifty-one Seascapes taken between 1980 and 1991. Each print is a tri-tone offset lithograph from an edition of 500, printed in 1991 by Kyoto Shoin Co., Japan for the occasion of a Sugimoto retrospective at IBM (Tokyo) and the Carnegie International (Pittsburgh). Each print is embossed with the name of the sea and the date on the recto. All images are available as individual prints. We also have a complete portfolio of the fifty-one seascapes available, sold with original aluminium folio and slipcase.
