FRANCO FONTANA: LANGUAGE OF COLOUR
We are very proud to present the first solo exhibition at Atlas Gallery inaugurating the recent representation of master photographer Franco Fontana.
Born in Modena (Italy) in 1933, Fontana is one of the pioneers of colour photography, renowned for his intense and abstracted ‘scapes’: landscapes, seascapes, cityscapes and bodyscapes. His true subject is colour and how it can express something beyond visual reality, even when the literal subjects of the artist’s photographs are fields, buildings or city pavements.
The show will comprise of a variety of works from the 70s – 2017, including extra large master prints and an amazing group of unique polaroids. Like many artists, Fontana used the Polaroid camera to make images that are spontaneous, intimate and experimental.
Fontana has worked in colour from the early 1960s, at the time a radical shift away from the established norms of black and white fine art photography. His work has won many awards, including when in 1992 Tokyo Metropolitan Museum named him as one of 23 photographers who had “created a new age”. He has published more than 100 books in seven languages and had many solo exhibitions worldwide.
