Bill Brandt: Beach Nudes
We are proud to announce the joint acquisition of the complete photographic archive of Marlborough Gallery.
In the mid 1970’s Marlborough gallery, then the pre eminent art gallery in the world expanded their artist representation to include the leading photographers of the 20th Century.
At this time the photographic collecting world was in its infancy and Marlborough under Paul Katz, the gallery’s first creative director of photography and Pierre Apraxine who had been a curator of painting and sculpture at MOMA embarked on a series of landmark shows of Brassaï, Bill Brandt, Berenice Abbott and other major photographers. Both Brandt and Brassai were contracted exclusively and the gallery placed their works in major museum and private collections worldwide.
In 1983, Marlborough ceased exhibiting photography, and the gallery’s extensive photographic holdings were placed into storage, effectively lost to the public for decades. Now rediscovered, this extraordinary archive includes signed exhibition and collector prints in pristine condition, offering collectors a rare opportunity to acquire significant works by masters of 20th-century photography.
To celebrate this historic acquisition, we will present a selection of signed Bill Brandt prints at Photo London (Booths G20 and G22) from 15–18 May.
We are delighted to announce our summer exhibition, Bill Brandt: Beach Nudes
This curated exhibition will present some of the highlights from the collection and Brandt’s most sought after works.
