Saul Leiter
Overview
Saul Leiter (1923–2013) was an American photographer and painter whose pioneering use of colour helped redefine the language of modern photography. Born in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania, Leiter moved to New York at the age of 23 to pursue a career as an artist. Although initially drawn to painting, he was encouraged by fellow artists Richard Pousette-Dart and W. Eugene Smith to explore photography. Leiter began experimenting with colour photography, developing a distinctive visual language characterised by painterly compositions. His work was included in Edward Steichen’s exhibition Always the Young Stranger at the Museum of Modern Art, marking an early recognition of his unique vision.
