Book Signing Syd Shelton Rock Against Racism, 9th of Feb, 5 to 7pm
We are excited to announce that we will be hosting a signing of Syd Shelton book Rock Against Racism next Thursday 9th of February from 5 to 7pm.
Rock Against Racism is a body of photographs that Shelton produced for and about the British Rock Against Racism movement (RAR) of 1976–1981. For Shelton, this work was a socialist act, what he calls a “graphic argument,” on behalf of marginalised lives. RAR was a political movement that emerged in 1976 in reaction to a rise of racist attacks on the streets in the UK. RAR confronted racist ideology in the streets, parks and towns halls of Britain. It was formed by a collective of musicians and political activists to fight fascism and racism through music.
Under the slogan ‘Love Music, Hate Racism’ it showcased reggae and punk bands on the same stage, attracting large multicultural audiences. At a time when fascist attitudes of the National Front were gaining support, RAR marked the rising resistance to violent and institutionalised racism.
This is the second edition of Shelton’s Rock Against Racism book, the first edition was published by Autograph.
We look forward to seeing you all there! Copies of the book are also available for purchase on our e-shop.
